Smith machine barbell row is similar to the basic version except that you do it by holding a bar attached to a Smith machine using an overhand grip. It is an ideal exercise for the lifters who find it difficult to hit their upper back in isolation when doing the movement using a barbell row. As an added benefit, the Smith machine variation requires less stability to perform the movement and is a lower back saver for those who have previously suffered back injuries.

How to do a Smith Machine Barbell Row
When bending at the start of the exercise, keep your back straight and lower the torso till it is parallel to the floor. The weights are usually somewhere between 80 and 100 lbs for this exercise.
Tips for Barbell Row with Machine
- Ensure proper form by avoiding slouching back forward, as it can result in a back injury.
- Keep your body stationary throughout the exercise and do not use your forearms to perform any movement other than holding the barbell.
Variation with Underhand Grip
Unlike the basic barbell row on the Smith machine, this variation is performed by holding the barbell with an underhand (supinated) grip.
